MALAY voters are pleased with Bersatu’s decision to join Umno and PAS in Muafakat Nasional, a survey showed.
In the Merdeka Centre poll held from July 15 to August 10, the Malays also expressed hope of seeing Umno and PAS in in the Perikatan Nasional federal government.
“Sixty percent of Malay voters agreed with Bersatu joining Muafakat Nasional, the coalition formed by Umno and PAS in 2019.
“Sixty-five percent of Malay voters prefer Umno to be in Perikatan Nasional but 25% do not.
“Similarly, 68% of Malay voters prefer PAS to be part of the Perikatan Nasional coalition,” said Merdeka Centre head of research Ibrahim Suffian today.
The 3,415 registered voters who were polled comprised 52% Malays, 29% Chinese, 7% Indians, 6% Muslim Bumiputera, and 6% non-Muslim Bumiputera in Sabah and Sarawak.
Respondents were selected via random stratified sampling of age group, ethnicity, gender and state constituency.
Ibrahim said the survey findings illustrated the strong preference and approval, particularly among Malay voters, for the coalition government headed by Muhyiddin Yassin.
“In our view, this increase of Malay voter support takes place on the back of positive management of the Covid-19 pandemic, (including) a rapid response in dispensing financial aid to low-income households and businesses,” he said.
Muhyiddin assumed the prime minister’s office with the support of Umno, PAS and Sarawak parties in March following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.
While the PM’s party, Bersatu is set to join the two Malay parties in MN, Umno has made it clear it will not officially join the PN coalition. PAS, however, has agreed to do so. – September 2, 2020.
