Selangor cops target 5% drop in crime index

SELANGOR police are targeting a 5% reduction in the state crime index following the launch of their latest crime prevention operation today.

Selangor crime prevention and community safety department chief K. Kumaran said police were focusing on reducing crime because the state’s crime index was high, especially after the enforcement of the recovery movement control order (RMCO).

He said wayside robberies were of chief concern and would be given attention under the operation.

“As the case can cause trauma and fear among the community, Selangor police are taking serious measures to curb the crime.

“We urge the community to come forward to help us by providing information so that action can be taken,” he said at Petaling Jaya police headquarters today.

He said the operation would involve 742 officers and personnel from nine police headquarters: Petaling Jaya, Serdang, Kajang, Gombak, Ampang Jaya, Sungai Buloh, Shah Alam, North Klang and South Klang.

He added that police would carry out inspections and roadblocks in selected areas, as well as raids to detain wanted criminals.

Figures from the crime index recorded in the state from Jan 1 to Aug 31 showed that there were 1,031 cases of unarmed gang robbery, robbery without firearms (610 cases), theft (2,095), car theft (1,020), motorcycle theft (3,001) and burglary (1,838). – Bernama, September 1, 2020.
