THE 1.6 million civil servants, long considered Barisan Nasional’s vote bank, will likely rethink their support in the face of soaring cost of living at the next elections.

Reuters said rising prices will have an impact on Prime Minister Najib Razak and BN’s fortunes at the 14th general election (GE14), following moves to cut subsidies and the imposition of the goods and services (GST) tax.

Civil servants are feeling the pinch, the report said, and rising prices were one reason urban and non-Malay voters punished BN at the GE12 and GE13.

Civil servants make up 15% of voters and there are fears among Umno leaders that many will turn against the party at GE14, which must be held by mid-2018.

Najib is confident after reining in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial scandal and will also try to capitalise on disarray in the opposition by calling snap elections, the report added. – May 8, 2017.
