PLANTATION and Commodities Minister Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali should be considered a hero even though he broke Covid-19 quarantine rules as his trip to Turkey had brought benefits to the oil palm sector, said PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.
Hashim was speaking at the Ipoh PAS muktamar, or annual general assembly, on August 29. The video of his speech is posted on Facebook.
The Islamist party’s spiritual leader said Khairuddin had been maligned and attacked by opposition MPs, when the fault lay with the Health Ministry and the Foreign Ministry for failing to ensure that the minister complied with the mandatory quarantine after returning from Turkey on July 7.
“The minister went (to Turkey) following all procedures, he came back, he should have been made to wear the pink wristband but no, he wasn’t made to.
“Now he (Khairuddin) is being asked to resign. PAS should not keep quiet. He is a hero of the people who has saved Malaysia and he is getting maligned. PAS members should not keep quiet, don’t let him defend himself alone,” Hashim said.
Khairuddin, who is Kuala Nerus MP, has been under fire from the public since his quarantine breach was revealed by Seputeh MP Teresa Kok in Parliament on August 18.
He reportedly paid the RM1,000 compound on August 7, but is under police investigation after Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said in response to public outcry that authorities should investigate him as no one should be above the law.
Health authorities have also said that top officials, such as the ministry’s director-general and infectious disease control chief, did not know that Khairuddin skipped quarantine and were only alerted when the media reported Kok’s revelation.
Hashim told the Ipoh PAS meeting, however, that the price of palm oil went up after Khairuddin’s return from Turkey, where his meeting was supposedly about Malaysia’s exports of the commodity.
“After he went, the price of palm oil went up… This means that he caused something good to happen. If the hoopoe bird could make something good happen that brought benefit to the country, he shouldn’t be punished.
“We should be voicing our support for him, give him the support as the commodities minister.”
Several opposition MPs have questioned whether Khairuddin’s Turkey visit was paid for by the government and whether it was approved by the prime minister, given the more than 200,000 Covid-19 cases in the country. – August 31, 2020.
