Officers from Kuala Lumpur Serious Crime Division arrests Jamal Md Yunos

CONTROVERSIAL Umno leader Jamal Md Yunos was arrested by police tonight for allegedly burning former minister Zaid Ibrahim’s effigy on Wednesday.

Police source said Jamal had allegedly burned the effigy shortly after lodging a police report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters against the DAP leader.

Jamal alleged Zaid through his Twitter account, had questioned the decree of Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who had criticised former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad regarding his remarks on the Bugis community.

Sources said Jamal was picked up at the Putra World Trade Centre after the closing ceremony of the Umno General Assembly this evening.

Jamal was arrested by Kuala Lumpur Serious Crime Division (D9) and he will be handed to Dang Wangi for further questioning.

It is understood Jamal is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code for provocation and under Section 14 of minor offences.

He is expected to be remanded tomorrow.

Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun told The Malaysian Insight yesterday police are investigating Jamal’s recent threat to bash in Zaid’s head with a hammer.

Fuzi said police have received reports over Jamal’s antics at the Umno general assembly on Thursday and yesterday, where he burned two effigies of Zaid and then threatened to bash the former law minister’s head in with a hammer over comments regarding the Selangor sultan.

Fuzi said police will decide whether to call Jamal, who is Umno Sg Besar chief, in for questioning after concluding their initial probe into the incident, adding that no police protection has been assigned to Zaid at the moment.

Following Jamal’s antics, Zaid expressed fears for the safety of his family and himself on his twitter account and said he “hoped the inspector-general of police will take care of our safety”.

Zaid had incurred the wrath of Sultan Sharafuddin after he told the sultan to be careful with his words when criticising Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Zaid had tweeted “no one is immune when the country burns”, in relation to an interview the sultan gave to The Star, in which he described Dr Mahathir as an angry leader whose “anger would burn the whole country”. – December 9, 2017.

  • WTF. There is a felony law for "provocation"??? This sounds like a law originally intended for.opposition, now used as a lessor offence to help Jamal. He should be facing criminal intimidation, personal assault.

  • Jamban has learnt that it is okay to flout the law, escape polis custody and hop over to another country. Here is a samseng empowered by his belief that he can threaten violence on people whose views he disagree with to intimidate and cow them without any serious repercussions. He can do with a longer stint in Sungai Buloh to understand that post-GE14 Malaysians are serious about the rule of law.
