PAS would not have toppled the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government if it not been for the Umno MPs who defected to Bersatu after the 2018 general election, said PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hasan.
“When several MPs, who won under the Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket, joined Bersatu, PAS saw that the move was not good for BN.
“But after seeing what had happened, we felt that the move, though not good, had its own intentions,” he said in a ceramah in Felda Trolak Utara last night.
Takiyuddin, who is also minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law), was speaking at the “5 secretary-generals ceramah” during the Slim state seat by-election last night.
Others were Annuar Musa (BN), Hamzah Zainudin (Bersatu), Chong Sin Woon (MCA) and M Asojan (MIC).
Following the 2018 general election, 15 Umno MPs, including Hamzah, had defected from Umno to join Bersatu.
This group was later joined by defections from PKR led by its former deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali, who is now a senior minister under the Perikatan Nasional government.
Hamzah, who said he was invited into Bersatu by then party chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, later played a pivotal role in taking the party out of PH, causing the government to collapse after just 22 months in federal power.

Takiyuddin said PAS decided to partner Umno under the “Penyatuan Ummah” (Muslim unity) charter on September 14 after BN’s defeat in 2018.
He said this was done after years of tussle with Umno to save Malaysia from PH.
“But little did we know that five months later, we would be able to topple Pakatan that had ruled for 22 months.”
He said Muafakat Nasional is a formula for BN and PAS to gain power for the sake of the Malay-Muslim community.
“And as such, I instruct all the PAS voters here to come out on August 29 to vote for BN candidate Mohd Zaidi Aziz who is representing us.”
Although, PAS had broken away from Pakatan Rakyat in 2015 because of its differences with DAP over the hudud issue, Takiyuddin said the Islamist party is not “racist”.
“We are here with MCA and MIC.
He added that PAS wants a more peaceful and harmonious country.
However, the party had used racial and religious rhetoric during the PH administration via the Buy Muslim First campaign and protests over Icerd (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) and the Rome Statute. – August 23, 2020.
