THOSE who defected and caused the fall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government should be held up as saviours instead of traitors, said Hamzah Zainuddin.
“We gain power through elections. But after GE14, we (Barisan Nasional) lost and somebody else won,” said the Home Minister in a ceramah in Felda Trolak Utara in Perak last night.
“When others have won, we were forced to sacrifice to regain power. But who should sacrifice? That task fell to some of us to ensure we regain that power again.
“As such, we should uphold those who had sacrificed as saviours. They are not traitors but saviours.
“So, we should not be envious or jealous but treat those who had sacrificed with sincerity and honesty,” said Hamzah who is also the Bersatu secretary-general.
Hamzah was speaking at the “5 secretaries-general ceramah” ahead of the Slim state seat by-election.
Along with him were secretaries-general Annuar Musa (Barisan Nasional), Takiyuddin Hasan (PAS), Chong Sin Woon (MCA) and M. Asojan (MIC).

Hamzah, who won the Larut seat contesting under BN, was one of 15 Umno MPs who defected to Bersatu between 2018 and 2019.
The group was later joined by 10 other defectors from PKR led by former deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali. Together, they later pulled Bersatu out of the PH coalition, causing its collapse after just 22 months in government.
This is the first time Hamzah or any Bersatu leader has appeared in the Slim by-election campaign since nomination day on August 15.
The seat is being contested by Umno’s Mohd Zaidi Aziz, former Bersatu member Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi and Santhara Segaran Subramaniam.
Although it was Hamzah’s first speaking engagement in the Slim by-election, there was a huge group of Bersatu members led by newly-elected Women’s Wing chief Rina Harun and another former Umno MP, Noor Azmi Ghazali.
Noor Azmi, who is now the deputy health minister, was the first Umno MP to quit the party in 2018 to join Bersatu.
Unlike the earlier ceramah which hosted former Umno president Najib Razak, last night’s event was notable for the absence of Umno members.
Other than the large group of Bersatu members, who have also been absent during most of the campaign, the only BN supporters were from MCA and MIC. – August 23, 2020.
