BERSATU is reviewing its constitution to allow Malaysians of any race or religion to join its ranks and the party’s leadership, said Prime Minister and party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
According to Muhyiddin, the study will be carried out by a committee led by Rais Yatim before being brought to the Bersatu Leadership Council (MPT).
“In the last MPT meeting, I brought a motion to enable associate members to contribute ideas, not only to become regular members, but also to give ideas and be involved in leadership.
“We will form a new division in Bersatu, we propose the formation of a new chapter that will allow allied members to hold office and contribute ideas to advance the party,” said Muhyiddin, while addressing the 2020 National Congress, which also saw 10 former PKR MPs join the party.
Among the non-Malays who want to join Bersatu is Segamat MP Santhara Kumar, who submitted his application forms earlier this month.
“A committee has been formed and will be submitted to me and brought to the MPT. If accepted, we will hold an extraordinary general assembly to amend the Bersatu constitution so that it can be implemented,” said Muhyiddin.
New arrival Mohamed Azmin Ali later said he believed the opening up of the leadership to non-Malays was the way forward for the party.
“I think the younger generation would like to see all Malaysians actively involved in political parties and the direction of the country,” he said at a press conference after the congress.
“We should not allow only one race to dictate. We are all Malaysians,” he told reporters. – August 22, 2020.
