LIM Guan Eng’s wife Betty Chew will be charged under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, at the Butterworth Session’s Court next Tuesday, her lawyer said today.

Lee Khai also said the case against Chew was not connected to the undersea tunnel project for which her husband has been charged this morning.

“She is going to be charged under Amla 2001,” he said, referring to the Act.

The former Kota Laksamana assemblyman was detained when she turned up at the Penang Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters at 10.45am today.

Lee said she was released after paying RM50,000 bail, and left the MACC office at 4.30pm.

Earlier sources told The Malaysian Insight that Chew, Lim and businessman Phang Li Koon would be charged over the couple’s purchase of a RM2.8 million bungalow.

Phang was arrested by Penang MACC yesterday.

Lim was previously jointly charged with Phang over alleged conversion of land status and the purchase of his bungalow.

In September 2018, months after Pakatan Harapan came to power, then attorney-general Tommy Thomas had applied for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal for the case against the duo.

The former Penang chief minister was charged with using his position as chief minister to gain gratification for himself and his wife by approving the application for conversion of agricultural land to a public housing zone in Balik Pulau for Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd.

He was also charged with using his position to buy a plot of land and bungalow at No 25, Jalan Pinhorn, on July 28,2015, from Phang for RM2.8 million, said to be below market value.

Lim this morning pleaded not guilty to soliciting for a bribe in the form of 10% of profits of the RM6.3 billion highway and undersea tunnel projects in Penang.

Lim is accused of committing the offence in March 2011 near The Gardens Hotel, Mid Valley in Kuala Lumpur, while he was Penang chief minister.

He faces more charges in Penang on Monday, also related to the project. – August 7, 2020.

  • No need to worry if there is no wrongdoing. Look at Najib. Facing imprisonment for 12 years n 210m fine with more heavy duty trials coming. Mahatma Ghandi and Anwar Ibrahim went to prison with purposes

  • Let's not forget that under Mahathir, they jailed Anwar under false charges of sodomy, and with a less than honest Judge Augustine Paul presiding.
