PADUNGAN assemblyman Wong King Wei, who resigned from DAP in a huff last Sunday, has rejected overtures of conciliatory talks and possible return to the party.
The two-term assemblyman said he had declined Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s offer to have talks.
“I have made up my mind. I just want to move on with what I have decided for myself,” Wong told reporters who had accompanied him on his walkabout in his constituency this morning.
During the walkabout, he thanked voters who had supported him for the last two terms and apologised for leaving DAP.
Wong first contested the Chinese-majority seat in the 2011 state election.
He said he will not be defending the seat in the coming state election that must be held before June.
DAP had nominated the Wong, a 40-year-old lawyer, to defend the seat before his resignation.
In his statement, he said he had grown “sick and tired” of DAP’s politics and he was “disillusioned with the direction and the way the party have been managed”.
A former Sarawak DAP vice-chairman, he said the party had “totally deviated from the aims, objectives and struggle in the earlier days” when he joined the party in 2006.
One was the party’s failure in making the most of its opportunity “to have our ideas and dreams realised into actions” when they were in power for 22 months in the federal government.
He said the party had lost its greatest opportunity when it was in power in Putrajaya.
“What the party promised to the people of Sarawak seemed to have gone down the drain.”
Chong was the only DAP MP from the state in the federal cabinet as deputy minister of domestic trade and consumer affairs.
Wong said if DAP is bent on making similar promises to Sarawakians, the party has a lot of explaining to do.
“It will put the party’s credibility in question.”
Despite still being passionate about politics, Wong said he will not be in active politics or join another party.
Wong said those who have been spreading rumours on social media about him joining another party are “those who refused to read my statement and to take it as it is”. – July 30, 2020.
