PKR stands a better chance of wresting back power if it sticks with the team of Pakatan Harapan in the next general election, said party grassroots.

Party members on the sidelines of the PKR convention today said the party should remain in Pakatan Harapan as it holds the controlling stake in the pact.

Kepong PKR treasurer James Yeap said the PH parties had stood under the PKR logo in the 2018 elections.

Perak PKR member Amir Mokhtar Mior Yahya said it would be mutually beneficial for the pact partners to stay together.

“With PH, we are confident we can win. We fight the good fight to win,” he said.

Tanjung Piai PKR youth secretary Mohd Noor Aizat, however, believed the party had what it takes to win on its own.

“It is a multiracial party that is accepted by everyone. It will be hard for them (other parties) but not for us.

He said DAP and Amanah needed the ‘neutralising’ influence of PKR to convince the voters.

“We can contest in rural Malay majority seats and also in urban seats. Other parties can’t really do that.

Kota Raja division youth information chief Muhammad Syaril Showkat Ali said  party president Anwar Ibrahim has an even better chance of becoming the prime minister this time around.

“Now his chances are even better. He stood his ground, kept his idealism and he has won the hearts of the people,” he said.

In the event of a snap poll, the party grassroots are confident the people will turn up in force to vote because they are unhappy with the Perikatan Nasional government.

Noor Aizat said PN is even worse than the old Barisan Nasional regime because corruption is ‘blatant’ in the new government

“PN still wants to be BN again. There’s a lot of corruption going on now. It’s so open,” he said.

Yeap said the people are still angry at the way PN snatched power.

“They are a backdoor government. People are angry. They  feel their votes did not count. People voted for PH and PKR, not PN,” he said.

Rumour has it PKR wants to part ways with PH and contest in all 222 seats. This is because the party leaders feel their allies have betrayed them by siding with Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s group.

Dr Mahathir has said that he would make a better prime minister than Anwar. When Dr Mahathir’s candidacy was rejected, he opted to propose  Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal as the opposition’s prime ministerial candidate rather than name Anwar. – July 26, 2020.
