PAKATAN Harapan is ready for snap elections, said Anwar Ibrahim, though the pact does not believe they should be held amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nevertheless, said the PH chairman and PKR president, the coalition is not taking any chances and is getting its election machinery moving.
“We are prepared. We are not taking any chances. The whole machinery is geared for early elections,” he told a press conference after the PKR convention in Ampang today.
The opposition leader said seat negotiations have started, with PKR represented by information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin.
Anwar added that polls should not be conducted while the world continues to grapple with the coronavirus crisis.
“The environment is certainly not conducive for elections. We have Covid-19, which will limit our campaigns.”
There have been rumours of snap polls being called at year-end, with Umno and PAS leaders pushing for an early vote.
The Malay parties are in a temporary pact with Bersatu and former PKR No. 2 Mohamed Azmin Ali’s faction of independent MPs to form the ruling Perikatan Nasional.
The next general election is due in 2023. – July 26, 2020.
