FORMER finance minister Lim Guan Eng was summoned to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters in Putrajaya for questioning over the Penang undersea tunnel project.
MACC deputy chief commissioner Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said Lim is expected to be present this afternoon.
“MACC is investigating the project after receiving new evidence,” he told The Malaysian Insight today.
The agency said in March it had opened six investigation papers into the RM6.3 billion project. The first was opened in July 2017 and the remaining five in January last year.
Of the five papers completed and sent to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP), three were returned while the other two were being studied by the DPP.
The tunnel is to connect Penang island with the mainland and is part of the Penang Transport Master Plan.
Allegations of corruption in the project were first raised by Malaysia Today blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, a former member of PKR and supporter of the opposition against Barisan Nasional.
He alleged in February and March 2019 that Lim, who was then Penang chief minister, and four other Penang exco members, had committed “criminal collaboration”, including receiving kickbacks in relation to the project.
Lim, who has denied the allegations, won his defamation suit against Raja Petra in late February.
Penang and state DAP have said that no corrupt act was committed as the project was awarded through open tender.
Lim is also DAP secretary-general.
The last person MACC detained in relation to its investigation into the project was former Penang Port Commission chairman Jeffrey Chew Gim Ean, who was remanded for four days earlier this month. – July 22, 2020.
