AUTHORITIES are still discussing whether to impose a RM1,000 fine or jail term should wearing a mask in public be made compulsory, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director-general of health said face coverings must be worn when boarding flights, taking public transport and in crowded areas.

“It is mandatory to wear masks in crowded areas where there is no social distancing.

“However, we are still looking at the implementation before making it mandatory,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the government is mulling making it mandatory to wear masks in public places, following a spike in Covid-19 infections in recent days.

“The government is contemplating making the wearing of masks compulsory in all public places.

“The specifics will be announced when the rules have been decided.”

Dr Noor Hisham said masks must be worn properly, covering the area from nose to chin.

“Improper use, such as allowing it to hang around the neck or forehead, or covering only part of the nose and mouth, leads to the risk of infection.

“Our advice is to wear it properly.” – July 21, 2020.
