WANITA Umno has declared war against all “enemies” in its bid to help the party remain in power in Putrajaya.
In her fiery opening speech at Umno’s 71st annual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur this morning, the wing’s chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Wanita Umno would not bow down and retreat until Umno wins in the next general election.
In her speech, the former cabinet minister also asked delegates if they could accept having Lim Kit Siang lead the country.
“We know (Umno president) Najib Razak’s record of achievement in taking care of the people’s needs. Will you choose a government that will be led by DAP?
“Can you accept our country being led by a leader who has a questionable Malaysian agenda, a government that will be led by Maharaja Lim? Think about it,” said Shahrizat, who did not contest in the last elections after losing her Lembah Pantai seat to PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar in 2008.
She also said that the election machinery has to be in great shape to support Umno’s campaign.
“The 14th general election is the king of all elections. We, as the party backbone, and our main machinery must remember that two important things will happen as we face the election.
“We represent the government and the leaders chosen by the rakyat. (Umno president) Najib Razak went through many challenges. But now, wherever we go, we get good responses,” said Shahrizat, adding that this was because Najib was a leader that truly cared about the people.
Shahrizat also questioned how people could see Najib in a bad light.
“I am also shaking my head. Who has been sick that he did not visit? The families of those who died? Weddings, even circumcisions, he also goes to. Other prime ministers did not do this.”
She said that Wanita Umno had to be ready to play their part in this “great war”.
“In this 14th general election, we want to jihad and ensure that the country does not lose to opposition. If you don’t want to lose the country, come with me, work hard and fight hard.”
Shahrizat had, earlier in her speech, thanked Najib’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, for her contribution to the early childhood programme that she initiated, Permata.
“I would like to thank and congratulate the wife of the prime minister, Rosmah Mansor, even though she faced many challenges and tests, (she faced them) with great patience.
“With Permata, then the Sexual Offences against Children Act 2017 and the setting up of a special court (to handle child sex crimes). To me, this is a legacy. These are the results of what she has been fighting for,” Shahrizat said.
The general assembly will be Umno’s last before the next general election is called next year.
Yesterday, Umno acting deputy president Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the party’s members had to wake up and learn their lesson from the past general election to ensure the party wins big in the next election.
The main component party of Barisan Nasional has ruled the country for the past 60 years.
It almost lost to the opposition in two general elections. BN lost its two-thirds majority and the popular vote to the opposition in the last general election. β December 6, 2017.
