PUTRAJAYA is looking to make the wearing of masks compulsory in public places following a spike in Covid-19 infections last week.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the government is fine-tuning the details.

“The government is contemplating making the wearing of masks compulsory in all public places. The specifics will be announced when the rules have been decided,” he said in televised special address today.

He said Malaysians must still observe social distancing, and called on people to remind one another to wear face coverings when outdoors.

“Under the recovery movement-control order, every individual, family and community are frontliners. Everyone must advise and remind one another (to wear masks).”

A fresh outbreak can be avoided if everyone is disciplined and plays their part, he said.

“Our victory against Covid-19 depends on ourselves. It depends on our awareness, our attitudes and our habits.

“The new normal must be continued. Just because Covid-19 cases were decreasing, we’re no longer wearing masks. Wear them, please.”

New cases have increased to the double digits over the last few days, and fresh clusters detected. – July 20, 2020.
