PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has warned that Putrajaya will be forced to introduce another lockdown if Malaysians fail to follow standard operating procedures strictly to fight the spread of Covid-19.

He issued the warning following a spike in cases and the emergence of new clusters across the country over the past week.

Muhyiddin Yassin said ministers were considering larger fines and stiffer penalties to people caught in breach of restrictions.

“This situation cannot be taken lightly. I am sure nobody wants to go through another lockdown again if Covid-19 cases spike.

“I am hoping and praying so that we do not reach that level,” he said in a special announcement today.

He also reminded schools and workplaces to provide better quality screening and protection to prevent further spread.

“Even though the number of Covid-19 cases is low, I am worried in the formation of the 13 new clusters during the movement control order (MCO),” he said, adding that he was particularly concerned about the four clusters originating from people returning to Malaysia from overseas.

Muhyiddin said those returning from overseas should quarantine themselves for 14 days and not meet anyone.

He said if they breach the law, action can be taken under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act.

“If there is a failure to follow separation orders, a penalty under the act can be fined if found guilty,” Muhyiddin said.

Putrajaya will also not hesitate to put Malaysians into quarantine centres if it is necessary to contain import cases effectively.

“If necessary the government will place people returning from overseas in quarantine centres to control the imported cases properly,” Muhyiddin said.
