PAS will defend its six parliamentary seats in Terengganu in the next general election, said vice-president Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar amid talk Umno and Bersatu are eyeing its seats.
The Terengganu menteri besar said this is its position as the party prepares to face possible snap elections.
There are eight parliamentary seats in Terengganu. The six seats currently held by PAS are Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman.
“I will give my commitment and the six seats stay with us and I will defend them,” he said yesterday in Dungun.
Samsuri was speaking at an event there where a video was uploaded on YouTube.
With the announcement, there are only two seats left for Umno and Bersatu to fight for – Besut and Hulu Terengganu.
Besut is represented by former MB Idris Jusoh while former Barisan Nasional man Rasol Wahid represents Hulu Terengganu.
Rasol is now a Bersatu member, having quit Umno in December 2019 and is now a deputy minister under Muhyiddin Yassin’s cabinet.
Think-tank Ilham Centre research chief Mohd Yusri Ibrahim said with Samsuri’s statement, the political scene in Terengganu will be fun to watch.
“Will Umno in the state let Bersatu contest in Hulu Terengganu and will Umno contest only in Besut?” he said in a reply on Facebook last night.
Malaysiakini yesterday quoting sources said the seat allocation between Umno and PAS in Terengganu has yet to be finalised.
Umno leaders are allegedly opposed to leaving PAS run the state.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man reacted by saying that he is confident that the seat allocation can be discussed and resolved amicably by the Muafakat Nasional select committee. – July 19, 2020.
