Quake off Papua New Guinea triggers tsunami warning

A POWEFUL 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Papua New Guinea today, prompting a tsunami warning for coastal areas within 300km.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 85km at 12.50pm local time (10.50am Malaysian time).

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in the area.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said populations in nearby coastal areas should be on alert for possible “hazardous” waves. – AFP, July 17, 2020.
