THE Selangor Legislative Assembly today approved a motion urging Putrajaya to enact a law against party-hopping.
The motion, brought by R. Rajiv (PH-Bukit Gasing), aims to deter elected representatives from switching parties. It received unanimous support in the assembly.
State Speaker Ng Suee Lim said the motion’s approval is a call to assemblymen and MPs to vacate their seats should they join another party, so as to uphold the electorate’s mandate.
He said the original motion was to urge the Selangor government to amend the state constitution, to reflect a seat vacancy should an elected representative leave the party on whose ticket they contested in the elections.
“(There is a possibility) for elected reps to, at some point, jump from one party to another, or resort to betrayal and so on for certain reasons.
“So, we urge the federal government to draft an anti-hopping law,” he told reporters at the lobby of the state assembly building in Shah Alam.
He said the motion will be sent to Parliament within two weeks after it is studied and, if need be, improved. – Bernama, July 16, 2020.
