Limkokwing University gets show-cause letter over ‘King of Africa’ billboard

PUTRAJAYA has issued a show-cause letter to Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) over a controversial billboard showing its founder as the “King of Africa.”

Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad said the government wants an explanation for the billboard even though the university has apologised.

“The ministry seriously regards the racial allegations against LUCT which went viral on social media. The ministry has issued a show-cause letter to demand further explanation from LUCT,” she said in a parliamentary written reply.

Noraini was replying to Bangi MP Dr Ong Kian Ming who asked if action would be taken against LUCT for its billboard.

The billboard shows a digital illustration of Lim with a cheetah next to a photo of him surrounded by students in Sierra Leone. Lim’s figure is crowned with the words “King of Africa”.

A petition was launched on change.org which said the portrayal of Lim as a “saviour” was condescending and “robbed African students of their agency to pave their own way in the world”.

Limkokwing University has since said on Twitter that it has removed the billboard and that it regretted any “misunderstandings.”

“We would like to extend our sincerest apology for any misunderstanding caused.

“We stand united against racism and we do not condone any discriminatory acts against any particular race. At Limkokwing University, we acknowledge, respect, embrace, and celebrate our differences,” it wrote.

Noraini said even though the university had taken down the billboard and apologised, stern action must be taken to ensure Malaysia was hospitable to international students.

“Even though LUCT apologised, the ministry will still continue its investigations to ensure the name and image of the country are upheld,” Noraini said.

If found to be warranted, the university can be charged under Section 89(1) of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 which prohibits distinction of race and creed.

“The ministry will not compromise in any issue that relates to race and will ensure all complaints on this matter is resolved,” Noraini said. – July 16, 2020.
