MORE than 400 daily part-time jobs have been secured at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for unemployed graduates who were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa said.

The employment programme was conducted under MYJobs@Wilayah which is in accordance with the ministry’s Wilayah Prihatin agenda which comprises four other initiatives that aim to help cushion the impact of Covid-19 on KL residents.

Speaking at the appointment letter giving ceremony, Annuar said the candidates were interviewed last month and as many as 500 of them attended the interview.

The minister said wages would be based on their qualifications, with degree holders being able to earn as much RM100 a day, which was equivalent to RM3,000 a month.

“We encourage the city council to manage this part-time programme as one of the ministry’s efforts to create job opportunities quickly by giving priority to those who have just lost their jobs during the movement-control order (MCO),” said the minister.

“Thus, we hope that by giving people the opportunity to work in DBKL, we can provide alternatives and can make recruitment quickly during this difficult time.”

The minister said this programme was according to the needs of DBKL.

“This daily part-time job programme is based on the needs of the city hall, with financial resources made available to DBKL, we will be able to cover the salaries which will amount to RM14 million.”

Among the employment areas offered by DBKL are service, construction, maintenance, cleaning, manufacturing, and packaging.

Through the MYJobs@Wilayah initiative, DBKL is seeking to fill another 500 part-time positions for unemployed graduates.

As for the 360 homeless people that were placed in DBKL shelters during the MCO, the minister said they are still undergoing training while the rest have been given jobs elsewhere.

“In fact, those who are undergoing our training programme right now have been offered jobs as recent as two days ago,” he said.

He said a few companies came and interviewed some of the homeless, eventually offering them (the homeless) jobs.

“We would like to encourage more companies to come forward and offer more jobs to these homeless people under our programme,” he said.

“In time, DBKL might recruit those who are still undergoing training,” the minister added.

Last month, the ministry said they have sent more than 300 homeless individuals to undergo training in Sepang for a month, while another 60 would be sent to a training centre in Kuantan for three months at the ministry’s expense. – July 15, 2020.
