Malaysians stuck in India violated visas to attend tabligh event, says minister

MORE than 100 Malaysians who attended a tabligh event in India had to face legal action for violating the conditions of their social visit passes by attending a religious activity, Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said.

He said a total of 189 Malaysians have been stuck in India since the country enforced a lockdown against Covid-19 in March.

Of this total, 125 who faced court action were recently cleared of the charges, while another 52 have their cases still in court.

“I’ve been informed that there were 125 Malaysian tabligh members in New Delhi who faced court action and were released of the charges on July 9 and 10,” Hishammuddin told a press conference reporters at Parliament today.

“There are 52 others who are still facing court action.

The 189 Malaysian tabligh members are spread across India, with 157 in New Delhi, 23 in Chennai and 9 in Mumbai.

As for the total number of Malaysians stuck abroad because of Covid-19 lockdowns, Hishammuddin said there were still 317 of them in 37 countries as of July 14.

He said, of the total, 191 are considered to be in critical condition, and this includes those in India.

He said the foreign ministry is organising a repatriation flight scheduled for July 17 for those in India.
