TELUK Intan MP Nga Kor Ming has resigned as deputy speaker, with immediate effect today.

At a press conference in the Parliament lobby, Nga said he did so in solidarity with Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, who was earlier today removed as the speaker after a motion to have him vacate the post was passed.

The motion was tabled by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and was passed with 111 votes to 109 from the opposition.

“This morning we saw a speaker who had integrity being removed for no good reason. As a sign of solidarity with Ariff, and based on principle, I will only serve the government that was elected by the people,” Nga told the press conference.

“I hereby announce my resignation as deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat with immediate effect.”

Nga also faces a motion for his removal as deputy speaker by Muhyiddin, which was slated for debate this afternoon following the Dewan Rakyat’s lunch break.

Ariff was elected as Dewan Rakyat speaker after Pakatan Harapan won federal power in May 2018.

The Dewan Rakyat then also appointed Nga as deputy speaker. – July 13, 2020.
