THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission should not waste its time searching for corruption in the Penang undersea tunnel project, said Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy.
The Penang leader, whose office MACC officials visited yesterday as part of investigations into the RM6.3 billion project, said the commission should stop harassing the DAP-led Penang government.
“Where is the corruption in the Penang undersea tunnel project?
“Harassing the Penang government, its officials and others do not indicate any wrongdoing,” he said in a statement today.
He said the MACC should concentrate its resources on tackling the corrupt practices of Umno and PAS leaders.
“Perhaps the MACC may want to channel its limited resources into investigating and prosecuting Umno and PAS leaders, especially those involved in the 1MDB and other scandals,” he said.
Yesterday MACC officers visited the offices of Ramasamy and Zairil Khir Johari but both the state executive councillors denied they were questioned.
Ramasamy told The Malaysian Insight three MACC officers went to his office at 10am, but did not question him or take his statement.
“No statement was recorded. They took pictures of the office, talked to my staff, asked for their schedule, and interviewed two of my personal security personnel.
“They didn’t ask me anything,” Ramasamy said.
Zairil, who chairs the works, utilities and flood mitigation committee, also said MACC officers did not ask for his statement.
MACC chief Azam Baki said yesterday that the investigation papers on the project were in the final stages of completion.
The investigation papers are expected to be completed in two or three weeks and will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action, he told Bernama.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state government had received a letter from the MACC asking to interview several state executive councillors and state eaders regarding the undersea tunnel.
Former Penang Port Commission chairman Jeffrey Chew was remanded for four days beginning July 1 to facilitate investigations into the case. – July 4, 2020.
