No Umno backing for Muhyiddin in GE15, says Ku Li

UMNO will not support Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin if there are fresh elections, said Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

“I don’t think so.

“The arrangement in Perikatan (Nasional) is mainly to keep stability. But when we face a general election, it’s a different ball game and Umno has to put its act together,” said the Umno adviser in an interview with Channel News Asia today.

Tengku Razaleigh was responding to a question on whether Umno will support Muhyiddin in GE15.

The 83-year-old said Bersatu shouldn’t even be in a coalition with Umno and PAS as it complicates the seat allocation process.

“Bersatu shouldn’t come into the picture. They feel it should just be Muafakat Nasional… maybe just PAS and Umno getting together with the traditional partners of Barisan Nasional (BN) like MCA and MIC.

“And then you don’t have much of a problem with the allocation of seats. But if you bring in Bersatu, we may face an election that will put us in a hung situation again where nobody has a dominant position or a clear majority. And then we will have a very unstable situation,” said the Gua Musang MP.

He also said Umno’s chances are good in the next elections, needing only to find its own leader to take on the role as prime minister after that.

“Good as in we are in a dominant position.

“This is a big question. What BN or Umno has to decide is to hoist a person who can lead with integrity. Those who were leaders yesterday must be prepared to sacrifice and make way for others.”

On Thursday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and BN secretary-general Annuar Musa said that they will be heading into the next elections with Muhyiddin as their prime minister.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has not confirmed whether it was an Umno stand or Annuar’s personal opinion. – July 3, 2020.
