UMNO Supreme Council member Annuar Musa said Muafakat Nasional is open to discuss Bersatu joining the political alliance, if it wanted.
Annuar, also a member of the Muafakat Nasional secretariat, said Barisan Nasional should not have any problem working with Bersatu because it had previously worked well with PAS to form Muafakat Nasional.
“We have some experience on how to work together with a political party that used to be alien to Umno, like PAS.
“We have been on different sides of the fence for many years and the divide is really very deep, but finally we managed to work very well together.
“So we should make full use of that experience now. There is nothing to stop Muafakat Nasional working with Bersatu,” the Federal Territories minister said after a site visit to the KL wholesale market today.
It was reported that Bersatu was set to send a delegation of five leaders to meet with Muafakat Nasional secretariat leaders formally today.
However, Annuar said the meeting had to be postponed until next week because some PAS delegates could not attend.
Muafakat Nasional is the pact between Umno and PAS that the two former rivals signed after losing the 14th general election in 2018.
It allows them to co-operate politically, such as supporting each other in by-elections, although they are not in a formal coalition.
Asked about Umno’s reaction to the possibility of Bersatu joining Muafakat Nasional, Annuar said Umno and PAS would each have to discuss the matter first internally.
Any move involving party members should be discussed, he said. – June 30, 2020.
