THE Chini state by-election on July 4 is a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) and two independent candidates.
Returning officer Zaliza Zulkipli announced the three names today at the close of nominations for the by-election, in Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara, Pekan.
BN’s Mohd Sharim Md Zain, 41, will face off businessman Tengku Zainul Hisham Tengku Hussin, 64, and social activist Mohd Shukri Mohd Ramli, 49.
The opposition is not fielding a candidate, after its PKR representative lost to BN in the 2018 general election.
“After checking the nomination papers, I am satisfied (that everything is in order) and have decided to reject none of the nominations,” Zaliza said when announcing the names of the candidates.
Barisan Nasional is expected to enjoy a walkover in the Chini by-election in the absence of real competition from the political big names. Chini is also traditionally its stronghold. – Bernama, June 20, 2020.
