TAHFIZ schools and madrasah nationwide can open their learning institutions from June 24 despite a number of new Covid-19 cases detected at these places, said director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said although these centres are allowed to open, the Health Ministry will conduct time-to-time surveillance to ensure that they adhere to strict standard operating procedures.

“They can open their schools and learning centres but the task of the Health Ministry is to conduct screenings from time to time.

“This will be the way the Health Ministry monitors and conduct surveillance so that we can detect any possible cases,” he said, answering a question if tahfiz schools and madrasah will be able to open on the same day as other government schools.

Today, Malaysia recorded six new cases, where one of the transmissions was reported in a tahfiz school in Kuala Lumpur.

As of June 19, a total of 435 tahfiz schools and madrasah have been screened. The total number of students, teachers and staff in these schools is 23,349.

A total of 19,050 samples have been taken and 722 were tested positive.

Noor Hisham said the surveillance would continue even if the nation exits from the recovery movement-control order.

Besides the six new cases, Malaysia recorded 70 recoveries, while there were no deaths.

Today is also the 13th consecutive day recoveries outnumber new infections. – June 19, 2020.
