PKR rejects Dr Mahathir as PM candidate

While PKR rejects Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the PM candidate, it says it is open to discussing with all parties, including the nonagenarian, on how to save the country. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, June 19, 2020.

PKR will reject any proposals to nominate Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister, said the party in a statement today.

“We remain with the consensus that Pakatan Harapan nominates Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister,” said the PKR central leadership committee after its meeting today.

PKR, however, said it was open to discussing with all parties, including Dr Mahathir, on how to save the country.

The party released its statement after holding a special online meeting with PKR MPs this morning.

“PKR is committed to strengthening PH and will focus on preparing for snap elections,” said the party.

PKR is currently in a tussle with its PH allies, DAP and Amanah, who have decided to nominate Dr Mahathir as the coalition’s prime minister candidate to face Perikatan Nasional in fresh elections, or if they have sufficient numbers to replace PN at federal level.

On Wednesday, DAP organising secretary Anthony Loke said in an interview that his party, Amanah and Warisan Sabah had decided to nominate the 94-year-old again. – June 19, 2020.

  • Can anyone actually blame PKR for NOT trusting Tun? He's given them so many reasons to reject him outright. It's tragic that PH DOES need him if they are to regain power. That's the conundrum they have to face!

  • M has completely destroyed his own trustworthiness by trying to over smart others and acted in many occasions in contradict with PH interests. We need a smart PM but not a wicked and unpredictable one to even undermine the public aspiration on a number of issues. He is confirmed a leader concentrating on splitting others to gain personal recognition or centralize his executive power. All Malaysians are tired, confused, missled and manipulated too long by this 'professional' actor of all time. All his sons are multi billionaires bcos of him. Enough is enough, we need an honest PM yet smart enough to steer the country towards competent, unbribeable, transparent and firmed leader to eliminate poverty and provide amber opportunities to strike for success.

  • I can't say that PKR is wrong on this matter but we all know that PH needs Tun M for the next election.

    • The voters must take a bold step forward. Tun not only let PH down but the entire nation who voted for PH in the last election. No one can ever trust him again. Once in power he tends to attack those who supported him instead of acknowledging their support. He is still caught in the old mind set of dividing the nation in racial lines.
He should bow out of politics and let the others lead the nation. If he truly loves the nation, then he should support those he betrayed in the first place.

  • The drama is not over yet. PKR will regret this decision. It pushed the PM issue so hard and was so blinded for one person to become PM that thieves and traitors saw an opportunity and got what they wanted. Decent Malaysians got screwed and deceived again and again by unscrupulous politicians.
