Malaysiakini under investigation, faces contempt of court over readers’ comments

Attorney-General Idrus Harun says it is wrong for Malaysiakini to allow the comments to be published as they are 'unwarranted'. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, June 16, 2020.

NEWS portal Malaysiakini is being investigated over comments by readers published on its site that allegedly tarnishes the reputation of the judiciary, the portal reported.

It also has an ex-parte application against it filed by Attorney-General Idrus Harun to initiate contempt of court proceedings, which will be heard at the Federal Court in Putrajaya tomorrow.

The proceedings are against the portal and its editor-in-chief, Steven Gan, who was questioned by police from Bukit Aman earlier today.

The case is being investigated under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 as well as the Penal Code.

The A-G’s application filed yesterday concerns comments posted by readers in response to an article on June 9 about the chief justice’s instruction to all courts to be fully operational from July 1, following the easing of movement restrictions.

According to Malaysiakini, Idrus, in his affidavit, cited five comments that allegedly “meant that the judiciary committed wrongdoings, is involved in corruption, does not uphold justice and compromised its integrity”.

The A-G also said that Malaysiakini was wrong in allowing these comments to be published as they are “unwarranted” and had demeaned and tarnished the judiciary. – June 16, 2020.

  • Back to old days of UMNO. Well done PN. Freedom of speech is diminishing. PH had given much freedom to say against and for without any fuss. Such comments are the feedback to the administers to correct the wrong to right. What is the fuss here!
