Umno VP dismisses Bersatu’s call for sacrifice to make PN work

DO NOT expect Umno to make any sacrifices for Perikatan Nasional, party vice president Mohamed Khaled Nordin said.

According to Khaled, Bersatu must work to strengthen itself and its base instead of making unrealistic demands.

“Umno is not going to sacrifice by providing a lifeline to those who left the party when we lost. Umno may forgive them but will never forget.

“It is better for Umno to focus on its own strength so that it could convince Malays to join in its mission, rather than thinking about those who have hated and scorned the party,” said the former Johor menteri besar.

He was commenting on Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who yesterday said Umno must “sacrifice a lot” for Perikatan Nasional to be viable.

In a statement, Wan Saiful said Umno was not the dominant party in PN as it was in BN. Instead, Bersatu, which splintered off from Umno, is in charge of PN.

“Certainly, some Umno leaders are worried. Equability in PN will make it better than BN.

“For now, Umno needs to be given time and space to manage the transition,” he said in the statement, adding that all PN parties must respect the process taking place in Umno.

“Umno is not new in politics and they have experience when it comes to undergoing change. Give them time and respect their internal process,” he said in the statement.

Khaled today said it was Bersatu that needed to sacrifice and join Umno for the sake of the Malays.

“The offer is clear, it is up for Bersatu to choose. Umno is not for certain elites or for those in power.

“Without these people Umno will still survive, but without Umno we are not sure what their future holds,” he added.

“Wan Saiful knows Umno and PAS can save Bersatu. Malaysian politics requires vision, not to be power crazy and must also prioritise bigger missions.”

“Umno sacrificed a lot to strengthen Barisan Nasional (BN). We gave them (component parties) seats that Umno could have won.

“Umno is the party that is always sharing its energy and leadership to make sure our bigger family in BN stays strong.”

“Umno will never become any party’s lifeline or to any party or leader. Umno’s lifeline is only for the Malays,” he said. – June 15, 2020.
