PRIME Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should rejoin Umno to avoid political tussling over seat allocations for Perikatan Nasional (PN) parties in the next elections, Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed said.
He said it would be “shameful” if Muhyiddin’s party, Bersatu, were to want half the number of Malay seats and expect Umno to campaign for it.
“Bersatu should not dictate, they should play a complementary role. How many votes can they get?” Nur Jazlan told The Malaysian Insight.
Muhyiddin is now backed into a corner with simultaneous problems, the former Pulai MP added, such as trying to secure a stronger mandate, holding on to his government and dealing with seat negotiations.
“The way to solve it is, dissolve Bersatu and Muhyiddin rejoins Umno,” Nur Jazlan said.
He also said even if Umno, PAS and Bersatu leaders manage to reach an agreement on seat allocations, sentiments might be more difficult at the state leadership and grassroots levels of the respective parties.
The rank and file might not be so tolerant of Bersatu, he said, and this could lead to other factors such as boycott and sabotage when campaigning for elections.
“If Bersatu wants to contest in 50 Malay seats, PAS and Umno will not agree. If they can get 15 seats, they should be grateful.
“Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Abdul Hadi Awang and Muhyiddin can agree but if the members disagree, it would mean nothing.
“If we fight among ourselves, Pakatan Harapan (PH) will win,” Nur Jazlan said.
The Malaysian Insight reported yesterday that Bersatu is eyeing 50 out of 222 parliamentary seats in the next general election, or snap polls if one is called this year.
Sources said this was discussed at a meeting between Bersatu and PAS leaders in Putrajaya on June 1.
Bersatu was part of PH until Muhyiddin withdrew the party from the coalition that was elected to government in 2018.
It was the newest party in the then government, co-founded by Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Muhyiddin in 2016, and won only 13 out of the 52 federal seats it contested in 2018.
Speculation is rife that snap polls will be called as Muhyiddin seeks legitimacy for his government which was formed in late February with the support of a slim majority of MPs from Barisan Nasional, PAS, ex-PKR leaders and Gabungan Parti Sarawak. – June 14, 2020.
