Patrick Teoh charged, faces 1-year jail term

FORMER radio announcer and actor Patrick Teoh was charged at the Johor Baru Sessions Court this morning for allegedly insulting the Johor crown prince.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of insulting Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim by issuing a statement to Southern Tigers Sdn Bhd at the Tan Sri Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium in Johor Baru at about 5pm on May 8, according to the charge sheet reported by The Star.

Teoh, 73, was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for sharing offensive and menacing content.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum fine of RM50,000, up to a year in jail or both, and a further fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence is continued.

Teoh is represented by M. Puravalen and Wong Hong Yi, while Mohd Syafiq Mohd Ghazali is the deputy public prosecutor.

Sessions court judge Kamarudin Kamsun set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and instructed Teoh not to make further statements on social media until completion of his case.

The judge set July 20 for case mention.

Teoh was arrested on May 9 and held in remand for five days for police investigations into a video clip of he re-shared on Facebook showing the Tunku Ismail dressed in military uniform, along with allegedly offensive words. – June 14, 2020.
