ANTI-GRAFT officers have been accused of using intimidation tactics while questioning a witness over RM250,000 allegedly stolen from the home of Bersatu politician Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
The former minister’s aide, Siti Nurul Hidayah, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers had threatened to slap her and verbally abused her.
She said MACC officers also ordered her into stress positions, such as standing on one foot with both hands raised.
She told this to reporters at a press conference in Putrajaya today, where she read out the police report she had lodged against the MACC.
She said she had gone to MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday morning after being asked to give a statement on the case involving her boss’ money.
“The questioning started about 11.30am but before they asked me anything, they had put me under pressure by harassing me.
“One of the officers used harsh words like ‘babi’ (pig) on me, while another officer threatened to slap me.
“He brought his hand right to my face,” she said.
She said five MACC male officers surrounded her while one of them kicked the chair on which she was seated.
“One of them then asked me to stand on one foot with both my hands raised. He said that if I was tired, I could switch legs,” she said, adding that she had been summoned for questioning thrice since April.
She also said she was made to answer questions about Syed Saddiq’s personal life and believed that the MACC’s tactics were to pressure her to confess information that implicated him.
Siti Nurul said she was also not allowed to speak to her lawyer who was also waiting for her at the MACC lobby.
“I am a witness in this investigation, not a suspect,” she said, adding that she was allowed to leave about 11.30pm.
“I believe I was summoned to help with an investigation as a witness and not a suspect. Such actions are to scare me so I can give them answers that they want and not my real answers,” she added.
When contacted, an MACC official said the agency followed procedures in investigations.
MACC chief Azam Baki said the investigation director will issue a statement on the matter.
Earlier today, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Perikatan Nasional was using enforcement agencies like the MACC to pressure the opposition, specifically against Bersatu Youth leaders who were aligned to him.
“We are surprised that the MACC is doing this, detaining people, questioning them and all that.
“If they don’t (stop) we have to be very active in exposing all the wrong things that they carry out,” he said during his press conference.
Meanwhile, Bersatu Youth member Adam Mukhriz Mohd Muhayeddin told reporters that he had lodged a police report against MACC for interrogating him and another party member in isolation until the wee hours of the morning today.
Adam is also Dr Mahathir’s media aide. – June 5, 2020.
