A CAMPAIGN to oust Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last month failed, said Nur Jazlan Mohamad.
The Johor deputy liaison chief said several individuals had gone to the division chiefs to ask them to sign a memorandum of understanding asking the Umno president to step down.
“They said Zahid should relinquish the president’s post as he has an ongoing court case. But the case hasn’t even been decided yet,” Nur Jazlan told The Malaysian Insight.
Although the movement did not get much traction, he said it was still a problem.
The former deputy home minister said Zahid had brought more stability to Umno following its defeat in the 2018 elections.
“It’s not a very clever move (to oust him) as Umno is now more stable while other parties are breaking up.
“We got through the bad times and we have strengthened our leadership under the president,” said Nur Jazlan.
He said efforts to remove Zahid were not to benefit the party but certain individuals.
“They are only doing it for their own personal interest.”
Nur Jazlan declined to say who was behind the move to remove Zahid.
“One thing I’m sure of is that it is not by Barisan Nasional advisory board chairman Najib Razak. He is the key to stopping any such efforts.
“These attempts will not work if Najib is against it and I’m sure that the former president is not behind it,” said Nur Jazlan.
After a shaky period post-general election, Umno leaders have manoeuvred the party back into power by backing Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.
Apart from positions in the cabinet, many of its elected lawmakers have been appointed to head government-linked companies and and statutory bodies.
Through a power sharing arrangement with Perikatan Nasional, Umno has regained the top office in the governments of Johor and Malacca.
