EFFORTS at a “political transition” by Pakatan Harapan will be supported by PKR as talk of the coalition making a comeback to federal power continues.

However, in making the pledge in a statement released today, PKR’s supreme council did not specify what it meant by such a transition or what form it would take.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim had on May 29 said that the coalition was trying to get 129 MPs to back a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in the Dewan Rakyat.

A successful no-confidence motion would be a step towards showing that the Perikatan Nasional government does not have majority support in the 222-seat Parliament.

Perikatan was formed after about 40 MPs left Pakatan in late February to join hands with political rivals Umno, PAS and a handful of Sarawakian and Sabahan parties.

A planned no-confidence motion to test Perikatan’s legitimacy in the Dewan Rakyat on May 18 fizzled out after Parliament convened only to hear the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s speech.

“The supreme council has stated that the party will strengthen Pakatan Harapan, especially in efforts relating to the power transition. PKR will continue to stand with Pakatan Harapan,” the statement, which was signed by PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil and posted on Facebook, read.

In a meeting today, the party’s leaders had also discussed the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic impact on Malaysia.

The party said it was formulating policies to deal with the pandemic’s impact on jobs and livelihoods, and these included redeploying labour and boosting hard-hit sectors.

Programmes concerning the education sector will also be drawn up, it said.

The virus has so far infected 7,819 people in Malaysia as of today, with 1,351 cases still active.

The national death toll remains at 115. – May 31, 2020.
