THE brothers arrested in connection with the September 14 tahfiz school blaze in Kg Datuk Keramat have been sentenced to two months’ jail after pleading guilty to a drug abuse charge.

Magistrate Zilfinaz Abbas said the sentence is to run from the day of their arrest.

She earlier rejected the proposal from the prosecutors to send the two boys to a correctional school in Malacca following advice from the Welfare Department.

The siblings are now placed under two-year observation by the National Anti-drugs Agency (AADK)

Deputy public prosecutor Nurakmal Farhan Aziz said the brothers will have to report themselves twice a month for two years as part of the sentence.

“The magistrate also set the mother on bond to ensure the duo’s good behaviour. She also has to accompany them to AADK. If both fail to adhere the terms, the mother will have to pay RM5,000 as a penalty,” he said.

The siblings were represented by lawyer Haijan Omar. Both are expected to be released today.

Earlier today, Zilfinaz freed a 12-year-old boy allegedly involved in the tahfiz school fire of drug charges.

The juvenile’s lawyer, Noor Svetlana Mohd Noor Nordin, told reporters at the court that the prosecution withdrew the charges against the child after he passed a drugs test.

The juvenile and the siblings were among seven youths aged 12 to 18 arrested over the pre-dawn fire at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school in Kg Datuk Keramat, Kuala Lumpur, on September 14, which killed 21 pupils and two teachers.

The 18-year-old suspect, Mohamad Shahrul Nizam Ikmal Shafi-in, pleaded guilty in another magistrate’s court today to drug abuse. His case was fixed for mention tomorrow. – November 28, 2017.
