THE Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) is heavily guarded by the police to prevent the foreign patients from escaping.

Selangor police chief Noor Azam Jamaludin said 74 policemen from the Sepang and Kuala Lumpur International Airport police headquarters were deployed there to strengthen security.

He said the quarantine centre, which houses illegal immigrants who have coronavirus, is surrounded by barbed wire.

“The tightening of control is also assisted by the Malaysian Armed Forces and People’s Volunteer Corps.

“So far, there have been no attempts to escape and they (the patients) are cared for nurses and Immigration personnel,” he told Bernama yesterday.

Noor Azam said it would be difficult for the police to track down the patients if they were to escape.

“So it is best to take precautionary steps,” he said.

Illegal immigrants in a detention centre who test positive for the virus are housed in the quarantine centre, he said.

Malaysians who were previously isolated at MAEPS have been transferred to Sungai Buloh Hospital.
