THE police will investigate a wedding that took place at a Seri Kembangan temple recently, with the view that people attending violated the conditional movement control order, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

According to the minister, weddings and funerals are still not allowed to be held at any place of worship.

“The police are taking action against the organiser and the people who attended the event,” he said at the ministry’s daily press conference in Putrajaya today.

Serdang police chief Ismadi Borhan said the police were investigating after receiving a report. He said a team from Seri Kembangan police station visited the temple at 7.45am today.

“At first, the management denied the function took place at the temple on Monday, but they later admitted that a wedding ceremony was held from 8am to 10am in the presence of some 20 to 30 guests.

“Police will track down all suspects under 7(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020,” he said.

Putrajaya had allowed 174 non-Muslim places of worship in green zones to open on June 10 under strict standard operation procedures (SOPs).

Green zones are areas without any Covid-19 infections.

Ismail Sabri said the decision was made after consultation with National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique and religious leaders of all faiths.

He reiterated that houses of worship have to strictly follow the SOPs.

“These places of worship will not be allowed to open daily but only on important days in the week, one or two days, depending on their religion.

“For example, for Christians it is on Sunday. They can open only on that day.

“If there are violations, then this relaxation of the rules will be retracted.”

He said the 174 places of worship nationwide that are allowed to open their doors next month comprise 84 Hindu temples, 15 Chinese temples, 67 churches and eight gurdwaras. – May 25, 2020.

  • This is inexcusable lawlessness! Firstly, the temple authorities who approved this ceremony should be charged with the maximum available punishment. All those involved, including the newlyweds, should be forcibly quarantined for 14 days in a government facility, preferably along with detained illegal immigrants. These crazy people should be made an example of before other lawless elements take matters into their own hands and start conducting full-scale festival-level celebrations!
