MUKHRIZ Mahathir has warned Kedah’s new Perikatan Nasional government that the people will be watching its every move.

He resigned as menteri besar this morning after losing majority support in the state assembly.

After his quit announcement, Mukhriz said the new state administration, to be headed by PAS, must not ignore investment and environmental issues.

“We will be monitoring your every action. The people will also be looking closely to see if the new government continues our good work in the state.

“The people will look at whether the new government continues to protect the environment, as we did, or if they will allow logging.

“Consider this a stern warning to you. Do not involve the people and state administration for your political purposes,” he told a press conference in Alor Star.

PAS’ Jeneri assemblyman, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, will take over as menteri besar. He will be sworn in before Kedah’s Sultan Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah later today.

It is the second time Mukhriz has been forced to step down as menteri besar without completing his term after losing support from among assemblymen.

In February 2016, he resigned under Barisan Nasional rule after criticising then prime minister Najib Razak over the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal. He had held the post since May 2013.

His second tenure, under Pakatan Harapan, lasted just two years.

In his presser, Mukhriz listed his administration’s achievements since the 2018 general election.

He said Kedah recorded the third-highest investment in the country, after Selangor and Penang, and that he stopped encroachment on the Ulu Muda water catchment area.

“The international racetrack in Sg Petani is in its second phase of construction, while the technology park in Kulim is being upgraded and has attracted billions of ringgit in investment.”

He added that PH will embark on a roadshow in the state to explain the political situation to the people. – May 17, 2020.
