THE Chini by-election will be held on July 4, announced the Election Commission today.

Nomination is fixed for June 20, while early voting will be held 10 days later.

The conditional movement-control order aimed at curbing Covid-19 is set to end on June 9.

The Pahang state seat fell vacant following the death of 60-year-old Abu Bakar Harun due to a heart attack on May 7.

He retained the seat for Barisan Nasional in the last general election with a 4,622-vote majority over PAS and PKR candidates.

The seat is under former prime minister Najib Razak’s Pekan parliamentary constituency.

Yesterday, BN secretary-general Annuar Musa said the pact will field a candidate to defend Chini, and that it will continue working with PAS through the Muafakat Nasional partnership as was done in previous by-elections since the 2018 general election.

He said BN will make adjustments so that the election campaign complies with regulations to prevent coronavirus infections.

Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, who is chairman of both Pahang BN and Umno, will act as the pact’s director for the upcoming contest. – May 15, 2020.
