A KAPIT man is under investigation over a death threat against Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister James Masing.
The 44-year-old suspect allegedly issued the threat in a WhatsApp group.
State deputy police chief Dev Kumar said the man was picked up yesterday after a report was lodged on the matter.
He said the suspect, who was released on police bail after having his statement recorded, is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities or services.
On Wednesday, political secretary to the chief minister Kudi Jantai and the Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) youth wing in Sg Rajang town lodged a report against one Stephen Kuleh over a series of angry posts on the dangerously high level in the country’s longest river caused by several days of heavy rain and the release of water from the Bakun hydroelectric dam.
This resulted in low-lying areas being inundated, though there have been no reports of settlements or villages being flooded.
In one of the posts, Kuleh asked how residents are benefiting from the 2,400-megawatt Bakun dam, which began operations in 2011, and the under-construction Baleh dam.
They are living in fear year after year, he said, while taking aim at Masing and his PRS over their silence on the rising water level. – May 15, 2020.
