SEVERAL Bersatu members have written letters to the party’s disciplinary board calling for action to be taken against its president, Muhyiddin Yassin, for taking the party out of Pakatan Harapan.

Several letters by different grassroots members were sighted by The Malaysian Insight, all dated May 13, and on similar complaints that Muhyiddin had unilaterally made the decision to withdraw Bersatu from PH without the approval of party members through a general assembly or extraordinary general meeting, nor with the approval of the supreme council.

Merbok chief major (Rtd) Anuar Abdul Hamid told The Malaysian Insight that three of his division’s members had written such letters to the disciplinary board.

“The letters have been sent but we are not sure if the headquarters has received them as it is closed and there is no one working there.

“But, we also emailed them to the disciplinary board. Let’s see whether they are brave enough to accept the letters or not,” Anuar said.

A template of the complaint letter has been posted on Facebook and shared to the Ahli Bersatu Seti Bersama Tun group for other members to copy.

Muhyiddin had also acted illegally by joining forces with Barisan Nasional and PAS to form the new federal government on March 1, also without approval of the general assembly, the letters read.

The complainants said his decisions were a violation of Bersatu’s original policies at its founding, that is, to be part of PH, to contest the 14th general election as a coalition and to form a PH government thereafter.

An additional complaint against the Pagoh MP was his unilateral decision to put himself up as candidate for prime minister, despite the supreme council’s decision on February 24 that supported Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

Dr Mahathir had resigned as Bersatu chairman and prime minister on February 23, a day after he was given the mandate by Muhyiddin at a supreme council meeting to decide on whether Bersatu should leave PH. 

An audio recording of the February 23 meeting, where Muhyiddin is heard saying that the final decision will be left to Dr Mahathir, was leaked last night.

After that meeting, however, Muhyiddin and other Bersatu MPs, minus Dr Mahathir and his son, party deputy president Mukhriz, gathered at the Sheraton Hotel the same night, where they met with MPs from BN, PAS and PKR leaders who had switched camps.

Two days ago, Dr Mahathir had said he quit as Bersatu chairman and prime minister because his party defied his instruction not to leave PH.

Dr Mahathir and Mukhriz are still in Bersatu, but speculation is rife that they will be sacked ahead of party elections to be held in the coming months. 

Dr Mahathir is standing for the chairman’s position again and is the only candidate.

Analysts have said that any move to sack Dr Mahathir will put Muhyiddin in a tight spot as the party is split in loyalties between the two. – May 13, 2020.
