POLICE yesterday rescued an Indonesian maid, suspected to have been locked up and beaten by her employer, in Perak.
The 44-year-old worker said she had also not been paid her salary in two years, police said.
Manjung district police chief Nor Omar Sappi said the cops raided the house in Setiawan where she worked, following a tip-off.
A 48-year old woman and her 25-year old daughter were detained.
“The victim said she was locked inside the house and forced to work around the clock without pay for two years, and if she refused, she would be beaten with a metal rod.
“She also said she was given only leftovers to eat and nowhere suitable to sleep,” he said in a statement today.
Nor Omar said the maid came to Malaysia in 2018. She arrived in Pasir Gudang, Johor with an agent before she was sent to the suspect’s house to work as a maid.
The two women who were arrested did not have a criminal record and did not test positive for drug use , he said.
“The victim is now under an interim protection order (IPO) from the Seri Manjung Court for 21 days beginning today, and will be sent to a shelter home after she has been treated.
“Both suspects are remanded for four days starting today and the case is investigated under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 .” – Bernama, May 12, 2020.
