RADIO announcer and actor Patrick Teoh will be in custody for another two days after his remand has been extended to Thursday, said police.

Johor police chief commissioner Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said Teoh was taken to the magistrate’s court this morning where his remand order, which was expiring today, was extended for two days.

“We will continue with the investigations and he (Teoh) has shown signs of cooperation, so perhaps (with the additional remand) he will give his full cooperation,” Ayob was quoted as saying by The Star.

Ayob said earlier that police would be seeking an extension of the remand order as Teoh was not cooperating with the investigations.

Teoh’s lawyer Rajan Navaratnam, in a statement said he opposed the remand extension on several grounds, including there was no basis for further detention, but the court registrar granted police another two days.

“So, Teoh will either be released on May 14 or he will be charged in court on that day, subject to the outcome of the investigation,” said Rajan.

Teoh was arrested on May 9 after a report was lodged on his posting where the 72-year-old was believed to have shared a video clip of the Johor crown prince in military uniform and used obscenities in his Facebook comment on the matter.

The post is no longer on Teoh’s Facebook page.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities.

Civil society groups have called for Teoh’s immediate release saying it was unnecessary and excessive. – May 12, 2020.
