Next PM will be from Umno, predicts Zahid

UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the next prime minister would again come from his party.

Speaking to state Umno leaders via video link this morning, Zahid said the party contributed all the prime ministers to the nation, including the present one, Muhyiddin Yassin, and his immediate predecessor, Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He agreed with Kelantan Umno leader Wira Jazlan Yaakob that both leaders have Umno DNA in them although they’re now from Bersatu.

“I agree with Wira Jazlan. All Malaysian prime ministers have had Umno DNA, including PM7 (Dr Mahathir) and PM8 (Muhyiddin).

“God willing, PM9 will be from Umno (again).”

Both Dr Mahathir and Muhyiddin left Umno to form Bersatu following the fallout from the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.

They then joined forces with Pakatan Harapan to defeat the Umno-led Barisan Nasional in the last general election, resulting in Umno losing power for the first time in 60 years.

In late February this year, Bersatu led by its president, Muhyiddin, left PH and joined forces with Umno and PAS to form the new federal government despite objections from Dr Mahathir.

The new Perikatan Nasional government saw the return of Umno as a part of a ruling pact despite losing the prime minister’s post to Muhyiddin.

Zahid was responding to Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar, who voiced hope that Umno will again have one of its own as prime minister come the 15th general election.

The virtual conference today was broadcast live on Facebook in conjunction with Umno’s 74th anniversary.

Earlier, Zahid told party leaders that Umno is in no position to demand top posts.

The party faces a by-election in the Pahang state seat of Chini following the death of assemblyman Abu Bakar Harun from a heart attack on Friday.

Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail told today’s meeting that he is confident Umno will defend its stronghold.

The state Umno chief said the party will win with an even bigger majority now that it is in a pact with PAS.

“It will be like how Umno and PAS cooperated in the Cameron Highlands by-election, where combined, we were able to target more voters,” he said, adding that the state chapter is in the midst of discussing candidates for the Chini contest.

Abu Bakar won 10,027 votes in the 2018 elections, while the PH candidate trailed behind at 1,065. PAS got 5,405 votes. – May 11, 2020.

  • What a nut. Of course all the PMs have been from BN. BN has been controlling the elections from the beginning through money politics and racist politics. Zahid really lacks intelligence and decency. I hope Muhyiddin is proud of himself for placing the country in UMNO's hands once again.

  • Stupid DNA logic that next PM will be from UMNO. Malaysia is a democratic society and whoever is capable and wins the heart of the rakyat will be PM, not DNA.
