PAKATAN Harapan has officially announced to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker’s Office that Anwar Ibrahim will be the parliamentary opposition leader.

PH’s chief secretary Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said a letter on this had been sent to the speaker’s office on May 4.

A similar letter has also been sent to the minister in charge of legal and parliamentary affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department, he added in a statement today.

He said Langkawi MP and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Mohd Shafie Apdal, who is Warisan president and Semporna MP, have also been informed.

Both these leaders are not part of PH.

“Pakatan’s presidential council, which met on March 21 and April 26, discussed the appointment of the opposition leader.

“Usually, the opposition leader (post) is given to the party with the highest number of MPs in the opposition bloc. The appointment is also made after considering the feedback from all MPs from the opposition bloc.

“DAP, which has the largest number of MPs, informed the presidential council that it was not interested in holding the opposition leader’s post.

“As such, the council agreed to name Port Dickson MP Anwar Ibrahim as the opposition leader,” he said.

Anwar himself this morning announced that PH had named him as opposition leader. – May 7, 2020.
