NURULHIDAYAH Ahmad Zahid and her husband were each fined RM800 by the magistrates’ court this morning for breaching the movement control order (MCO) last month in Putrajaya.

The 41-year-old daughter of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and her husband Saiful Nizam Mohd Yusoff pleaded guilty to violating Regulation 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020.

Magistrate Shah Wira Abdul Halim meted out the fines. Both paid the fines.

The maximum penalty for the offence is a RM1,000 fine or six months in jail.

The couple broke the stay-home order on April 20 to call on Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, followed by Deputy Environment and Water Minister Ahmad Masrizal Muhammad at their offices in the administrative capital.

Nurulhidayah later uploaded pictures of the visits to her Instagram account.

Following a social media backlash and public complaints, police questioned the couple on April 24.

Nurulhidayah, dressed in a black hijab, and Saiful did not speak to the press after proceedings today.

Ahmad Zaidi Zainal represented the couple; Nur Ashikin Mokhtar was the deputy public prosecutor.

Nur Ashikin had asked the court to impose a jail sentence for the couple. He said they were fully aware they were flouting movement restrictions as the offence occurred during Phase 3 of the MCO.

Zaidi said the couple should be let off with a warning as they were in Putrajaya because they had been invited to help plan Earth Day celebrations.

The media were barred from the public gallery. – May 5, 2020.

  • Why RM200 discount for them? Ordinary people were fined RM1000! Perhaps the magistrate is an Umno member.

  • With every breach of law, and ensuing judgment, low quality magistrates and an unprofessional PDRM, are showing the rakyat that there are two sets of laws.
One for PN politicians, and one for the rest of us.

Where is the CJ and the backdoor AG for all of this?

  • This is very clear double standard on justice. 1 for rakyat and 1 for cronies of the government.

  • Why the exception when ordinary and poorer folks were fined $1000? If anything Zahids daughter should be given a much more heftier fine considering her arrogance, petulance and insolence when her violation was pointed by others. Are we now having different standards of justice for different class of people? CJ, your comments please.

  • The magistrate ordered that no reporters be allowed in court? Due to MCO the public cannot be at the gallery to follow the proceedings. The press is our only ears and eyes and should be allowed in. This was an open trial. By disallowing the press for no good reason, has the magistrate committed contempt of court? The action has given rise to speculation that the court is being partial and favoring the accused. Read together with previous convictions made for similar offense committed by non VIPs, are the public wrong in coming to such a conclusion?
