MALAYSIANS should emulate social conscientiousness practised by the Taiwanese and South Koreans, whose governments did not require any lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Both countries managed to bring levels of infections under control without imposing any movement restrictions but relied on the civic response of the public.
Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham told a press conference in Putrajaya today that while the goal of the movement-control order (MCO) in Malaysia was to ensure that the public stayed at home, now the message to the public during the conditional MCO (CMCO) is to follow a set of social guidelines.
The listed guidelines include obeying health regulations, protecting the sick and the vulnerable, immediately admitting sick individuals for treatment and observing social distancing of at least 1m in public.
“It is still early for us to judge, but looking at the practices in other countries, such as Taiwan and Korea, they do not have any MCO in place. But they have social discipline in place. They comply with standard operating procedures (SOP).
“(The public must) have social discipline, social compliance, social responsibility… to make sure they comply with the SOP. We want to make sure the industries and restaurants comply with the SOP. If they do not comply then action can be taken,” he said.
Noor Hisham urged Malaysians to practise social distancing, put on masks while in public, regularly wash their hands and use hand sanitisers.
“Compliance is very important to make sure we break the chain of infections. If they (the public) do not comply then there is a risk for the rate of infection to rise from 0.7 to higher.”
The number of new Covid-19 cases dropped to 55 in the last 24 hours, with no deaths reported during the same period.
The death toll from the coronavirus stands at 105. – May 4, 2020.
